Periodontics and gum recession treatment
Gum recession is the movement of the gum margin towards the tip of the tooth root, exposing the root surface. The tooth looks longer and the aesthetic appearance of the smile is lost. Gum recession can cause root caries, progressive destruction of the periodontal tissue and tooth loss.
Treatment options
Conservative treatment
This treatment method is effective when the process is not very advanced and can be stopped by removing the factors causing it. It is used when the bacterial infection is at an early stage. First, professional oral hygiene is carried out, during which plaque and tartar are removed. If the damage is minor, it may be enough to follow correct daily oral hygiene and rinse the mouth with antiseptic solutions. If needed, deep cleaning of the gum pockets (curettage) and tissue regeneration procedures may be carried out.
Surgical treatment
This method is used when the gum recession process is far advanced and the gum line cannot be restored by simple means. The essence of surgical treatment is to restore the lost periodontal tissue in the area of the exposed root surface, as well as the function and aesthetics. In such cases the exposed roots are covered by moving or shifting flaps of healthy gum from the neighbouring areas. If the periodontal disease is more advanced, flap surgery, surgical crown lengthening or restoration of bone defects with bone substitutes may be needed.
The most common periodontal diseases
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums which, if untreated, can reach the bone and develop into a less noticeable, slowly progressing disease – periodontitis. The aim of treating gum recession and periodontal diseases is to restore the conditions for good oral hygiene and to prevent complications that threaten tooth loss. The treatment of these diseases depends on the degree of damage.
