Oral surgery

Oral surgery is a field of dentistry covering the diagnosis and surgical treatment not only of the teeth, but also of the tongue, jaws, oral mucosa and sinuses.

Oral surgeons perform surgical tooth extraction, treatment of gum recession, root end resections, plastic surgery of the lip and tongue frenulum, removal of jaw cysts and benign soft tissue formations of the mouth, as well as other surgical procedures and operations of the oral cavity. Oral surgery is an inseparable part of comprehensive treatment when placing implants and restoring teeth. Before restoring teeth with implants, a jawbone augmentation or sinus lift operation is often needed.

The most common oral surgery procedures

01

Wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom teeth, as well as retained teeth (fully formed but, for various reasons, unerupted), can cause quite a few problems for the health of the whole mouth. When wisdom teeth do not perform a chewing function, are hard to clean properly and may damage the neighbouring teeth, it is recommended to remove them. Tooth extraction is most often carried out under local anaesthesia.

02

Jawbone augmentation

After teeth are lost, the stimulation of the jawbone decreases, so it starts to shrink. If the teeth are not restored in time, the missing amount of bone has to be augmented before the implantation procedure. The bone is augmented using the patient’s own bone tissue or a bone substitute. Once the required amount of bone has been restored, implantation can be carried out successfully.

03

Sinus lift

After the loss of teeth in the upper jaw, the jawbone begins to dissolve. During a sinus lift operation the sinus membrane is raised and the required amount of bone is augmented.

04

Removal of soft tissue cysts

Jaw cysts most often form because of an infection of the tooth roots, or from remnants of the dental lamina or epithelium. A root cyst can be caused by a dead tooth nerve or by untreated or poorly treated tooth roots. Cysts can only be removed surgically. To avoid complications, the causes of the cysts must also be eliminated – root canal treatment must be carried out and severely decayed roots removed.
